EMC and EMC Founder Honored by Home-owners
Bacon Park Home-owners Association presents EMC Engineering Services Savannah Branch and EMC Founder Larry Stuber with a commemorative plaque honoring work done by EMC on the Robert Fechner Recreational Area and their award winning Paulson Softball Complex.
Elizabeth Scott, BPHA President, and Tim Baumgartner, PE of EMC Engineering, collaborated to create commemorative cache that features the softball complex and the United States Civilian Conservation Corps 75th anniversary. The 1986 engineering project of the ball fields design and stake-out added improvements to the recreational area created by the Chatham County Commissioners during the depression-era works-program lead by Robert Fechner in the Savannah, GA area.

Water Distribution System Innovations

New Innovations in Water Distribution System Piping
By Alec B. Metzger, P.E.
Traditionally, water line construction has involved PVC or Ductile Iron pipe and these pipes are typically laid by direct bury in a trench and joined together with a gasketed bell and spigot. Depending upon the application, theses joints, as well as, bends and tees are restrained by concrete thrust blocks or mechanical restraining joints. When the need arises to cross a road, rail road, creek, or some other obstacle, the usual method would be horizontal directional drilling or jack and boring. Horizontal directional drilling uses a bore machine that bores under and then pulls the pipe back though the bore hole under the obstacle. HDPE piping has been the usual material for this application in the past. After the HDPE pipe is pulled-in, fittings must be fused to the material in order to join the HDPE to the PVC or Ductile Iron main. The jack and bore method works by jacking and boring a casing large enough to handle the carrier pipe and spacers under the obstacle. The casing is usually steel and the carrier pipe is most often restrained joint Ductile Iron Pipe.

Water, Water, Everywhere?
Extended article from the e-Pipeline, VOL I APRIL 2009
Earth Day 2010 is April 22. The Conserve Georgia website, a site which deserves a visit, provides links to agencies and organizations that participate in this annual observance recognizing our stewardship of the air, land, and water resources we ourselves depend upon, as well as our progeny.
In reference to Water Conservations, the site conveys this point:
“Whether in a drought or not, it is imperative that Georgians make water conservation part of our daily lives. Properly managing our water use in all areas of our lives can help us all save time and money. It also helps ensure that we have a supply of safe drinking water now and in the future.”

BENEFITS OF A PROPER LANDSCAPE DESIGN
An integral part of any land development process is the establishment of landscaped areas. There are many benefits that can result from proper landscape design including improvement of a property’s real estate value, reduction of a building’s heating and cooling costs, lower property maintenance expenses, and the enhancement of our quality of life. Whether it is the preservation of specimen trees or the establishment of new plantings, a properly landscaped development is good for the community and those who live in it.
