Completed in 2009, Centennial Place is the newest, state-of-the-art, residential complex on the Georgia Southern University campus. It offers apartment style living while providing retail and restaurant space to the public. EMC Engineering Services, Inc. provided planning, surveying, environmental site assessments, subsurface exploration, geotechnical, civil design and construction phase services for the redevelopment of this 14± acre site.
Parking and infrastructure was designed in accordance with the standards set forth by Georgia Southern University and all local governing agencies. The required parking count was achieved while maximizing the greenspace throughout the paved surfaces. The existing trees were preserved in the design layout whenever possible. In areas where the existing vegetation could not be saved, landscaped islands were created for new vegetative growth.
The utility construction cost was minimized by designing the layout of this project to avoid major utilities that would otherwise have had to been relocated. Particular utilities avoided with this layout were the electrical concrete duct bank and the majority of the fiber optics across the site. Not all utilities could be avoided, including some of the fiber optics connecting the existing dormitories to be demolished.
Storm water generated from this site will discharge into the City of Statesboro storm conveyance system. Best Management Practices were implemented to reduce storm water discharge from the site and improve the water quality into the City’s storm conveyance system.
