The ability of a structure to withstand the forces exerted on it over time is largely dependent upon what it is built upon. From parking lots to multistory buildings, failure will more than likely occur for even the sturdiest of structures without adequate support. Providing this support requires the determination of the subsurface conditions that underlie the site and how these conditions will impact the design, constructability, and performance of the foundation, pavement, or other soil supported structures planned for the project. This information is utilized by the structural and civil engineers to size the foundations of these structures. The purpose of the Geotechnical Engineering Services at EMC is to identify and analyze these subsurface conditions and assist the structural engineers and contractors during their design and construction.
The services vary from preliminary geotechnical evaluations through final design and materials testing and inspections. EMC has provided these services for residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings; water, wastewater, and drainage facilities; and docks, bridges, walls, and bulkheads. Clients have included architects, private developers, industries, counties, municipalities, and state agencies. Providing these services are experienced professional engineers and engineering technicians. They are very knowledgeable of the design requirements in the International Building Code (IBC) as well as state and local building codes. They are experienced in the Ridges and Valley, Piedmont, and Coastal Plains geological provinces of the Southeastern United States.
